Is Yoga Right For You?

Do you ever find yourself noticing that headache, stomach knot, or aching set of muscles in the same area of your body over and over again? Odds are that you notice this ache or pain when you are going through stress of some kind, whether it be past, present, or future stress. Through the combination of studying trauma-informed care and yoga over recent years, researchers in both the yoga and clinical world have come to understand that our bodies store up some of our most intense emotions, wounds, memories, and stressors. This is not by accident, based on how our central nervous system is built to protect us from any potential threat from an evolutionary perspective. But it doesn’t mean we are meant to walk through these anxious, painful, sadness pieces of our bodies–the nonverbal wounds–all alone. I am here to help you move into a yoga and somatic practice that allows you to explore your lived experiences, understand the power and strength of your own body, and find deeper healing and reconnection with your higher self.

Why Do I Love Yoga?

Why do I feel so strongly about this practice as a means to healing, exploration, curiosity, and play? I believe in the power of getting into your body to tap into the all encompassing implicit, nonverbal experiences of your life path or story, having explored this myself through years of yoga, breathwork, exercise, meditation, and somatic based therapies. Throughout most of high school, I gravitated to sports, exercise, and dabbled in some yoga. Part way through college, I walked into my first true power vinyasa class in a local studio outside of my university. I fell in love at first with the physical element of the practice, and I think for most of us, this is often the “gateway.” But overtime as a stressed out, high performing, perfectionist college student who was terrified to fail, I started to feel the relief of anxiety symptoms, and the connection with my body in a way that no other practice had lent me before. It is this piece right here, the higher connection with my inner spirit and true self, that made me want to come back over and over again. I never stopped seeking yoga after this point, so much so that I wanted to teach one day.

I am certified and trained to primarily teach the flow style of yoga through the vinyasa tradition, though I have also come to deeply appreciate the styles of Yin and Restorative Yoga over time. The ability to slow down your body movements, and sink into a restful, yet mindful and intentional space, is sometimes what a lot of us fast moving, fast thinking people really need to catch up with ourselves. Yin Yoga in particular involves sitting into a deep stretch for a few minutes at a time in the posture, allowing you to really get into the deeper fascia or muscular tissue of your body to release your stored emotions. Finding your edge of release while focusing on breath and present awareness can truly be a whole new level of connection with the compassion you so desperately need and seek for your body.
